What is the Great British Beach Clean in South Devon?
Every September, volunteers across the country unite for one purpose: to protect and restore our coastlines. The Great British Beach Clean, organised by the Marine Conservation Society, is more than a litter pick, it's a nationwide movement that provides vital data to influence environmental policy and protect our seas.
In South Devon, the event takes on extra meaning. With rich marine biodiversity, thriving coastal communities, and tourism-driven footfall, our beaches are both beautiful and vulnerable. From secluded coves to popular family shores, every piece of plastic removed, and every data point recorded helps shape the future of marine conservation.
When & Where
The 2025 Great British Beach Clean runs from 19–28 September. Events are hosted across South Devon, including Brixham, Paignton, and Salcombe. You can join a local event or register your own.
Why It Matters
Last year alone, over 30,000 volunteers took part, collecting more than 100 tonnes of litter. The data gathered informs legislation around plastic use, packaging, and pollution.
In South Devon, these efforts also protect our resident seal population, support tourism, and preserve local heritage sites.
